‘Who am I? ‘ Sage Talk by The Micro Business Champion

First rule of public speaking is to never
apologise at the beginning of your speech. But I always apologise because I am not the
REALl Tony Robinson and that disappoints many audiences. It gets me speaking engagements
but again disappoints many audiences. I’m not the legendary actor, historian, activist
as well. As I found out with the amount of abuse I got her after the vote in Scotland
because he promoted the no vote. What you will notice is that I’ve got a striking
resemblance to George Clooney. In fact if I take my hat off you see that I’ve got hair
like George Clooney. If I had my my espresso cup you’d realise it’s a lot more but I’ve
got a haircut just like George Clooney or as my my barber in Scarborough said ‘if George
Clooney came in here this is what he’d get. I’ll tell you a little bit more about George
Clooney later because I have modelled my whole lifestyle onr George Clooney.
As you can see I’m quite old so I’m delighted to be anywhere really. I’ve spent 28 years
running my micro businessAnybody in the room close to this … Tina Boden at the back – we’ve
met her already (“25″) – that’s not very interesting – anyone else (” 17 years as a photographer”)
17 years as a photographer. Now what would you say is one of the three
top new businesses that people are setting up – record numbers as Tina said setting up
in self-employment – the top is construction in terms of the number of self-employed businesses
carpenters, electricians, plumbers and so forth and there’s big growth, of course, in
management professional type occupations- people selling their skills such as virtual
assistants – huge numbers of virtual assistant. So what might be the third? (“Photographer”)
Photographer thank you very much. And so I can give you a stick of Scarborough Rock.
I know it’s so exciting for you. So, basically I’ve been running my micro businesses
for 28 years with my partner and my best friend who is in Milton Keynes. She’s called Clare
Francis and she’s NOT the famous novelist and round the world yachtswoman So I started
my business in 1986 but it was really before that – in 1984 – that I actually got interested
in what is, not a glamorous subject, but is about the survival of enterprises Now we’re
at the MADE Entrepreneurs Festival which is about what I’ve really devoted the whole of
my life to. It’s a mad thing and a crazy thing to do to
see if we can improve the survival rate of enterprises particularly in the UK But one
of the reasons for me in 1984. I should have said I was, was that I was speaking to 10,000
people as Managing director of the largest direct selling company in the world – speaking
to 10,000 people. One of my jobs was to go around the country’s – Wembley Arena too,
talking about enterprise and how you can grow business from very little and make a seriously
good living. But it was only about 0.01% that were making a lot of money and there are an
awful lot of people spending a lot of money. Because the thought that they needed to look
good if they are in business for themselves. They spent business money on cars and other
things to improve their confidence. I realised there was this whole business opportunity
industry out there with thousands and thousands of people selling business opportunities.
And would you believe that I found that one of these business opportunity providers was
the Governmen. Government is one of the major sellers of ‘start your own business’, ‘business
is great’, ‘ start-up this start-up that’ …
Ministers, of course, would say that it’s because ‘You’re the backbone of the economy’
but I believe they really think that we’re the ”smelly feet of the economy’ – not ‘ businesses”
because it is self employment. Self employment is where 80% of all new jobs come from in
the economy- self employed one person businesses not the high growth businesses not the serious
entrepreneurs doing fantastic things Ministers want. Instead, it’s people like you and me
on their own doing it
