Toso Chess Set

bjbj This is a chess set by the Italian artist
Giannini Toso. Giannini Toso apprenticed as a glassblower in Murano, which is Venice s
glassblowing island, and was known for many years for his works in blown glass. Later
in his career, he began working in flamework glass, which is what you see here. Flameworking
is done with many different colors of glasses over a hot flame or a torch, and the figures
are built up in a much different way than they would be at the furnace. For example,
with flameworking, you can have much greater detail of the figures than you can, working
hot at the furnace. The figures here reflect Giannini Toso s upbringing; he was raised
a Catholic and later converted to Orthodox Judaism, which was the religion of his mother.
So, he s combined an element of his own biography into this chess set. The making of chess sets
has very specific requirements: for the number of pieces, the height they should be, what
they should represent. And so Toso manages to combine these requirements with elements
of his own life, and in this case the two religions that have dominated his life: Catholicism
and Judaism. The figures hold attributes that are appropriate to their religion and to their
rank: the bishop, for example, holds a bishop s miter; the Jewish bishop holds not a miter,
but a shofar – the ram s horn that is blown in ritual occasions urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
