The office toilet, the only place to have a breakdown while downtown. I remember being told that my tears at the front desk were embarrassing. I slowly learned the line between private and professional at work and saved my emotions for the sanctuary of the office bathroom. I realized the workplace is crisscrossed in these invisible lines. There’s a line that separates business and private life. A line to sign up my labor as a commodity. A line that divides the workplace in hierarchy. Starting as a receptionist fresh out of high school these lines were so odd and strange and I learnt them by tripping over them or watching others carefully or not so carefully maneuver them but then soon they’re second nature, normal. ‘Snakes and Ladders: a catalog by receptionist’ is my story and my attempt to understand my own experience.
