Prince Performs “Purple Rain” During Downpour | Super Bowl XLI Halftime Show | NFL

The morning of the game, I opened the curtains in my hotel room, and I was like, “Oh my god, it was like a scene from Moby Dick.” It was, like, the winds were blowing, the palm trees, and the rain was one of those Miami rainstorms that just would not relent. We’re in this truck, sitting behind don Mischer And I remember Don said, um, “Put me on the phone with Prince.” Don says, “Now, I want you know it’s raining,” and Prince [was] like, “Yes, it’s raining.” [Don continued] “And are you okay?” And Prince is like, “Can you make it rain harder?” And I was like, “…Right on.” We were told, “In 40 years, it’s never rained in a Super Bowl. Don’t worry about it.” So… that went well. We were up in a booth at the top of the stadium and the rain is pouring into the booth. It was so windy and rainy, we couldn’t even see. I was just panicked. Prince was using four separate live electric guitars. The stage was made out of a very slick tile which, when it got wet, was even more slippery. He had two Beautiful dancers with him. The twins, okay? They were wearing, I think, 8-inch heels, and I was just saying, “Oh my God. What’s gonna happen now?” Count it That Prince set is so wild. He does other people’s songs; he’s not promoting himself. He’s just making music. It’s profound, and it’s loud, and it’s funky and it’s just one performer, uh, shaking entire world It felt surprising; it felt spontaneous. Whatever script you might have had in your head for, “Okay, here’s what he’s going to do.” He didn’t do that. Musically, it felt very loose. He played big, epic Prince-style guitar solos. Turning the bad weather to his dramatic advantage… it was almost like a special effect. He could totally lean into that and make it seem like, “Sure, it’s raining. Of course it’s— I would have wanted it to rain! Like, I ordered that.” By the time we got to the end of the set, when he did do Purple Rain, that was one of those times where things just worked magically, and there’s nothing you can do but just say, “Thank you.” Come on, y’all! Don’t it feel good? Can I play this guitar? To me, it’s about one guy in the middle of a hundred thousand people and a hundred million people on television, and it’s your moment to be Prince at the Super Bowl and Mother Nature is dropping thousands and thousands of gallons of rain. I always thought [about] how cool the guy is to rise up and just get stormed upon, and just bring what he brought That was so special. Y’all want to sing tonight?

  1. THE BEST SUPER BOWL, I EVER SEEN MJ HAD NOTHING ON PRINCE. LOVE THEM BOTH, BUT PRINCE WAS THE BEST. NO QUESTION COUNT-IT, PRINCE WAS REALLY SINGING IN HIS VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. When Purple Rain begins and the mood changes and you forget this is the Super Bowl is such a good moment. One of my favorite Super Bowl moments ever.

  3. Not knocking Prince just uncomfortable with part of performance where he stands behind lucent fabric blowing for affects, seems to appear to look like satan..Prince was a God fearing man, Praise God but this larger than life part clearly doesn't reflect Him..one could argue all in the name of art??? Well I believe we'll all know one fine day, hope Prince ended up where he wanted to, ultimately not our Will But Thyne Be Done..serious business people.

  4. Most would cancel the show because of rain. Not Prince, he used the rain like it was planned. 💜💜🎸🎸🎤🎤🌧️🌧️⛈️⛈️

  5. Loads of people remember Prince performing at the Super Bowl in 2007 but how many people remember who the two teams were!

  6. His performance along with Michael Jacksons where probably the best in the history of Superbowl performances

  7. If we can not differentiate water from electricity? Then how advanced are we? Seriously glad this worked out. But damn.

  8. FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT KNOW:

IN SEPTEMBER OF 1957 THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND [QUEEN ELIZABETH] WAS A GUEST AT THE WHITE HOUSE. AND TO HER SURPRISE AND DELIGHT THE PRESIDENT HAD ARRANGED FOR HER FAVORITE SINGER/DANCER/PERFORMER TO BE THE SECRET ENTERTAINMENT THAT NIGHT. THE WHITE HOUSE RECORDS INDICATE THAT THE QUEEN STAYED OVERNIGHT AS EXPECTED AND SO DID THAT SINGER WHICH WAS NOT PLANNED. IT TURNS OUT THAT SINGER HAD THAT 'OL' BLACK MAGICK ' THAT ROCKED HER MAJESTY'S SOUL THAT NIGHT. NINE MONTHS LATER ON JUNE 7th 1958 A CHILD WAS BORN AND GIVEN UP FOR ADOPTION IN MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA. THAT CHILD WAS NAMED AS YOU WOULD ADDRESS ANY MALE CHILD OF THE QUEEN – THEY NAMED HIM – PRINCE.

OH, SO WHO WAS THE DADDY WHO SANG DANCED AND PERFORMED ALL NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE NINE MONTHS EARLIER??? WHY IT WAS NONE OTHER THAN SAMMY DAVIS, JR. THE FATHER OF PRINCE. PRINCE WAS TELLING US THIS IN HIS MUSIC AND ALBUM COVERS BUT WE WERE TOO BLIND TO SEE. TAKE A LOOK AT HIS ALBUM WITH THE DOVES ON IT. SEE THE BLACK DOVE HOVERING JUST ABOVE THE WHITE DOVE. YES IT WAS RIGHT THERE BEFORE OUR EYES BUT WE WERE TOO BLIND TO SEE.

  11. Purple rain always makes me cry for some reason. Watching this, crying my eyes out, with a huge smile on my face! Genius!!

  12. I was there on the field with the crowd. Wow what memories……you could feel the excitement in the air. The he did Purple Rain in the rain ………….still sends chills up my spine.

  13. Why was he famous anyway (he can't sing or dance?). The interviewees really are reading too much into it

  14. Did that guy say Prince had only the twins with him? Um no, he had 3 ladies with him that night. The beautiful lady wearing all white was also performing with him @5:06.

  15. Prince …pure talent pure entertainment complete professional and so sadly gone ….2016 and very much missed.

  16. Wow, one of the greatest performers and musicians of all time! I always regret not being able to see him live. Taken too soon, RIP ♥️

  17. The FATHER ABOVE KNOW THAT WAS GONNA BE THAT LAST PERFORMANCE LIKE THAT SO THAT WAS THE GOOD FATHER SAYING UR BLESS MY SON THAT WAS A SHOWER OF BLESSING SLEEP SWEET MY 😇SLEEP SWEET UNTIL WE MEET ONE DAY IN PARADISE❤ 🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏

  18. the guy said ''100,000 people'' = what does it mean by that? and he said 100 million peoples on television, there is 100 million people watching it? So much? or he is just exaggerating it

  19. I Wonder if Prince wondered about the rain: Was it Chemtrails rain? Or a big coincidence? He looked weirded out. IJS.

  20. There are few superstars left. Why not use computer animations to match the voices. Prince man. Once in a lifetime.

  21. I really have a hard time choosing which one is better, MJ OR PRINCE'S Superbowl tribute! When it comes to dancing and putting on a show MJ takes the cake, but then when it comes to instrumental wise, I have to give the award to Prince especially with that guitar solo! Either way I think we can all agree that these two superstars really made the Superbowl worth watching for non sports fans like me!

  22. This was easily one of the best performances ever at a sports venue, Michael Jackson was pretty close, and Whitney Houston had the best rendition of the national anthem ever but the absolute best moment at the Super Bowl ever was the moment between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

  23. I have seen every Super Bowl for the last 45 years and even though there have been bands that performed whose music I like more than Prince music, there is no doubt that Prince brought it and gave the best half time performance to date. It was definitely epic.

  24. For years, I admired him as a singer, but thought he was a bit too egocentric for his own good. After this show, I knew he was one of the greatest artists in history. Best Halftime Show in Super Bowl History.

  25. Again…PRINCE transcends what we know as music….thrilled that I lived during his reign….left a caverns void…

  26. Open air Dolphins Stadium had its moments. There's something to be said for being open to the night sky. The new stadium would've not had this magic.
