News 8 Eye Piece: It’s Like Chess

Thousands of people from across Wisconsin descended on La Crosse this week looking to pocket some fun. Photographer Greg White takes us to the WAMO (wham-oh) pool tournament in this week’s Eye Piece. [Pool balls being placed] Emery: “There’s a lot of comradery in it, ummm…” [Opening break] Emery: “It’s interesting, fun. It’s kind of like chess but on a table.” [Balls hit] Gary: “Well, you get into that groove and you get into the momentum.” [Ball hitting, and falling into pocket] Gary: “and you get into that, they call it, we call it a zone. And once you get into that zone, and once you get into that zone, and you just keep your mind in the game and keep shooting, you know you can run table after table. That’s what’s fun about the whole thing.” [Ball falling into pocket] Emery: “Typically, you’re planning at least two or three ahead. So you want to get a good angle on your next ball to get the angle on the next ball after that. Some times you’re better off not getting out. You’re better off not trying to make all your balls. You’re better off, you might want to make a couple and then hook a guy and try to get ball in hand and get out that way.” [Balls being racked] Gary: “If you’ve got cue in hand, you’ve got, you’ve got control at the table, you’ve got to make it count when you can.” [Opening break] Gary: “Can’t take anybody lightly, you know? You’ve always got to have your best game, because, you just never know, you know? But tournaments like this is friends get together, teams get together and they go for a weekend and they have a great time, drink some beer and have some fun and shoot some pool and make some good shots and get some bad shots.” [Opening Break] Emery: “Just from the comradery stand point, the couple guys that were playing here, I’ve shot with bob since 1985 and Rick since 1989, so, so it’s…you get to make some good friends while you’re doing this.” [NAT?] Gary: “Three years ago, I banked the eight ball in to win the whole state tournament, so that was a great, great feeling.” [laughs] [Bll hit into pocket]
