JACK WAS A VOLUNTEER CHESS COACH FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. HE WORKED WITH STUDENTS IN MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND TEENAGERS IN THE HENNEPIN COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER. IN THIS WEEK’S LIFE STORY, ANGELA DAVIS SHOWS US HOW JACK HELPED YOUNG PEOPLE EXPAND THEIR MINDS. OH, MY GOSH, I AM SO PROUD. HE WAS JUST THE BEST HUSBAND. HE SAID MOST KIDS JUST NEED SOMEBODY TO HELP THEM SEE THE BEST IN THEMSELVES. AND MOST KIDS NEED MORE THAN JUST THEIR FAMILY. HE REALLY CONNECTED WITH SO MANY OF THE KIDS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING, FOR SOME KIND OF SUCCESS AT SCHOOL. HE WAS SEEING THEM BECAUSE THEY WEREN’T ABLE TO FUNCTION IN THE CLASSROOM. ONE OF THE THINGS HE STARTED DOING WAS BRINGING OUT A CHESS BOARD. HE ALWAYS TALKED ABOUT HOW THEY LEARN HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT A SITUATION. THAT’S JUST WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO IN LIFE.
