Little Big Shots: Chess champion Emma Cheng

Little Big Shots: Chess champion Emma Cheng

SO WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THIS THROUGHOUT THE MORNING. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. WELL, SHE MAY BE SMALL, BUT BOY SHE’S ONE GOOD CHESS PLAYER. 8 YEARS OLD. YOU’RE SO MUCH OLDER NOW. SHE’S TAKEN ON THE TERMINATOR. BUT DON’T LET HER AGE FOOL YOU. EMMA, YOU ARE — IT LOOKS LIKE A NATIONAL CHAMPION. HOW IS THAT? THIS TROPHY IS HUGE. IT’S SO MUCH BIGGER THAN MINE. TELL ME WHAT THIS IS FROM. THIS IS FROM THE NATIONAL ALL-GIRL’S CHAMPIONSHIP WHEN I WENT TO CHICAGO. AND THEN SO I GET 4.5 OUT OF 5 POINTS. THERE YOU GO. SO I GOT FIRST PLACE. WHAT’S FUNNY WE’VE BEEN JOKING. THIS IS MY TROPHY WHICH I WAS IN THE NATIONAL JUNIOR HIGH CHAMPION, SEVENTH GRADE. I GOT TIED FOR 17TH, 22ND. EMBARRASSING. UNDER 10 YEARS OLD, AND TEN AND UNDER. YOUR TROPHY JUST TOWERS OVER MINE. IT’S VERY EMBARRASSING. SO I HAVE TO ASK YOU ANOTHER QUESTION. YOU PLAYED ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER. HE AUTOGRAPHED YOUR BAG. YOU DIDN’T GET TO FINISH, BUT YOU SAID YOU WERE CRUSHING HIM. SO YOU WERE GOING TO BEAT HIM. YEAH. WELL, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I’M VERY NERVOUS ABOUT THIS MATCH BECAUSE I HAVEN’T PLAYED IN A WHILE. BUT I FEEL SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT THAT WE CAN — WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A GOOD GAME, YOU THINK. YEAH. SHE’S BEING VERY MODEST. SO WE HAVE TEN MINUTES ON THE CLOCK. EACH OF US HAVE TEN MINUTES. SO THIS CAN’T GO LONGER THAN 20 MINUTES. I’M GOING TO BE RUNNING BACK AND FORTH DOING THE SHOW WHILE PLAYING. SO DON’T MIND ME IF I’M GONE FOR TWO MINUTES AND MY CLOCK RUNS AND I HAVE TO MAKE A MOVE, OKAY? OKAY. AND THEN IF I MAKE A BAD MOVE IT’S NOT BECAUSE I’M BEING RUSHED IT’S BECAUSE I’M TERRIBLE AT CHESS NOW. SO ARE YOU READY? YEAH. GOOD LUCK. WE’RE GOING TO GET GOING. WE’LL KEEP BUMPING BACK AND FORTH AS WE DO THIS MATCH, MONICA. DON’T MIND US. I LIKE HOW YOU’RE SETTING THIS UP, OH IT’S BECAUSE I’M RUNNING AROUND. I JUST WANT TO HAVE A LITTLE EXCUSE. YOU ARE GOING DOWN. WE’LL SEE. STUDENT LOANS OR MORTGAGE. THE DEADLINE IS 5:00 TODAY. GOOD LUCK. SPEAKING OF GOOD LUCK, MATT. MONICA, YOU LOVE IT. EMMA IS LOOKING AT THE SCRIPT. I SAY MONICA READS MY LINES ALL THE TIME. SO WE’RE HERE DOING OUR LITTLE BIG SHOT THIS MORNING. WE’RE TAKING ON 10-YEAR-OLD EMMA CHANG. EMMA IS NATIONAL CHAMPION. UNDER 10 ALL-SQUIRRELS. I WAS 22ND — ALL-GIRLS. I WAS 22ND CHAMPION. EMMA IS ONE MOVE AWAY FROM CHECKMATE. SO I SAID DO IT LYE ON TV. CHECK. AT LEAST I CAN SAY CHECK. SHE TOOK MY QUEEN. AND I HAVE NO OTHER MOVE. AND SADLY SHE GAVE YOU THAT MOVE. YOU STOP IT. I KNOW. I KNOW. ALL RIGHT. SO THIS DOESN’T MATTER. SAY IT. CHECKMATE. [ LAUGHTER ] YEAH, EMMA. YES. THAT WAS HUMBLING IN SO MANY WAYS. SO YOU’VE BEEN PLAYING CHESS FOR HOW LONG? FOUR YEARS. FOUR YEARS. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING, MATT? 22. SO WE DIDN’T HAVE TO MENTION THAT. YOU’RE REALLY GOOD. THE TROPHY DWARFS MINE. WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG TOURNAMENT FOR YOU? I AM — WELL, I GO TO OPEN TOURNAMENTS A LOT, SO PREBLELY, LIKE — PROBABLY LIKE TWO MONTHS OR SO, I WILL GO TO OTHER OPEN TOURNAMENT WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE. THE NEXT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IS WHEN? DO YOU KNOW? I’M NOT SURE. BUT YOU’LL PROBABLY BE GOING? THEY STILL DO CHESS RATINGS, RIGHT? . YEAH. WHAT’S YOUR RATING RIGHT NOW? 1600? 1600. YEAH. MY BEST RATING WAS 1100. THAT’S WHEN I WAS 14 YEARS OLD. 1600 AT 10 YEARS OLD. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GRANDMASTER? GRANDMASTER. GRANDMASTER. A LOT. WHAT’S THE RATING FOR THAT? IT’S LIKE 2600. SO YOU’RE WELL ON YOUR WAY. YEAH. WELL, EMMA CONGRATULATIONS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING OUR LITTLE BIG SHOT SEGMENT. I AM SURE THEY — MY WONDERFUL CREW — EMMA IS THE GREATEST. IF YOU MISSED SEEING OF OUR

  1. The trophy thing doesn't show how good you are I mean I can make a 20 feet trophy and play with my cousins and who wins it gets the trophy I mean does that show that I'm better? No right?
