Well the incredible thing about chess is
that it teaches so many skills that we want our young people to have. Because
it’s a decision-making game because it’s a thinking game you learn to think
critically you learn to make better decisions you learn to analyze the
consequences of the decisions that you make you learn to be patient to
concentrate more. You just simply learn to think more efficiently and more
effectively. I love working with youngsters who people think may be not
going in the right direction because chess has such an impact on their lives.
They normally don’t have many options and a lot of people don’t believe in
them but when they sit at the chess board you see them light up they start
thinking about the moves and the strategies. They’re ultra competitive
they want to win they want to show what they can do and chess, the game just
simply has that magic that power to capture their attention and to direct
their energies into something extremely positive. Chess transformed my life. Chess
has been everything for me. Growing up as a young person in Jamaica in a poor
neighborhood and then in Brooklyn New York
there was a lot of violence and a lot of poverty, but when I found chess it was
simply gold for me it was something that I could do every single day, I wanted to
do and pursue. I had no idea it would become a career. Now it’s taken me all over the
world, I get to meet new people and make new friends. It’s just simply my passion,
and thanks to it my whole life has been wonderful.
