How to Varnish Wood

How to Varnish Wood. Varnishing wood requires patience and attention
to detail. Follow these steps to get a beautiful, long-lasting
finish. You will need Work space Newspaper Sandpaper
Tack cloth Varnish Mineral spirits Container and brush. Step 1. If you’re inside, make sure your work space
is well ventilated and free of dust. Lay down newspaper to protect the floors. If working outdoors, choose a spot where wind
will not blow dust and debris onto your freshly varnished surface. Step 2. Give the wood a light sanding with very fine
grained sandpaper. Sand with the grain of the wood, not against
it. Wipe the wood clean with tack cloth. Lay pieces flat to avoid runs in the finish. Step 3. Use
the right varnish. Step 4. Thin the varnish by mixing with an equal part
mineral spirits in your container. Thinning ensures a hard cure. Step 5. Apply the varnish against the grain to a small
area. Immediately go over the same area again with
the brush, this time with the grain, and repeat over the whole piece. The first coat acts as a sealer. Do not leave your varnished piece in direct
sunlight or it will dry too quickly. Step 6. Allow the first coat to dry overnight or longer. Then sand the piece again with very fine sandpaper. Wipe off the dust with tack cloth. Step 7. Pour the varnish into your container. Do not thin the varnish. Apply the varnish with the grain. For best results, apply varnish in thin, even
coats. Step 8. Add more coats as needed, sanding lightly
before each application. If applied properly, varnish will provide
a beautiful and durable finish for many years. Did you know Varnish found on 2,500-year-old
Egyptian mummy cases still looks good today.

  1. So annoying to watch. Between the epilepsy inducing video and the voice-covering music, this howto is worthless.

  2. sorry the MUSIC IS RIDICULOUS!!!
trying to listen to this late at night and learn a few tips
just woke up the neighborhood trying to hear a calm narrative voice over Surf Music
seems like it might have been in formative -.-…………….

  3. hello , this is really cool video, but did you know that you can use gum copal to make an excellent varnish thats very useful for wood?

its cheaper and its sheen is very good.

  4. The instructions are good, but the video editing is poor.  The images change so quickly, there's no time to absorb what's being shown.

  5. Great video, short and to the point. I have a question. I am going to varnish a section of a tree. I can't really follow the grain since it's all tree rings. Is there a certain way to do this piece or any direction will do? Thanks!

  6. Would be better if it includes sub titles and shows the inputs clearly. At the speed the video is possibly only intended for experts

  7. Thanks a lot great video!
Today the carpenter installed 4 doors in my new house and i am planning to varnish them myself, i am about to finish sanding, so can i apply the varnish directly on the fresh wood as a first coat then sand it and do the second coat or i am missing something noting that i don't want to stain them? appreciate your help. Thx.

  8. I've purchased plans before…, and they have been worth it. Before anyone does, however, look for Hyezmar's book on Google and you won't have to purchase anything 🙂

  9. This is a fantastic woodworking book, “pepe amazing plan” (Google it). I took numerous classes as well as completed a 1 year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is better than any book I worked out of during those lessons. It describes everything concerning wood working and complements it with useful images.

  10. Thumb down for the music. And because you rushed the video when its talking about details where here you should give it enough time

  11. You can use woodprix plans. The best handbooks and very detailed instructions. You can learn much from them and make it yourself.

  12. If you want to build it yourself just google for woodprix. I know you will find good solutions for all your ideas.

  13. Music, music, music-turn the f*****g thing off,
I think the maker of this video must have been on drugs when they made this, couldn't understand it ,

  14. Why do we need a bloody music soundtrack. These days it happens all the time – ban all music from educational videos. I'm sure a lot of people exit the page after a short time and complain as I have done
