How to Measure for Board Mounted Valances and Cornice Boards

At Blindsgalore, we make measuring your windows
for board mounted valances and upholstered cornice boards a cinch. Be feel free to also
check out our guide and a worksheet at Blindsgalore.com. Make sure you are using a steel measuring
tape. For board mounted valances, simply measure the width of the area you would like to cover.
The top wood board will be the exact width you specify. No wood side board returns are
used in these valance styles. The fabric will hang off the top of the board. If you are
layering your valance over and existing blind, shade or drapery measure your width including
any hardware you wish to cover. Then, add one to six inches to that measurement. This
will be the number you give us for width. The length of the valance varies depending
on the style you choose. For upholstered cornice boards, measure the width of the are you would
like to cover. If you have molding, you will want to include that in your measurement.
Then, add two inches to that number. This will be the number you give us for width.
Next, choose the size of your side return, either four inches or seven inches. If you
are layering your cornice board over an existing blind or drapery, measure the depth of your
existing under treatment from the wall and add at least two inches to that measurement.
This is the number you will give us for the depth. We won’t take any deductions to our
outside mount measurements, so what you order is what you’ll get. A final pointer, don’t
forget that every window is unique so make sure to measure every single window. I hope
that helped and be sure to let us know if you have any questions because at Blindsgalore
we want you to love your windows.
