Chess Playing Robot (CPR)


We have accomplished a Chess Playing Robot at Palestine Polytechnic University It was a joint work between the mechanical and the electrical engineering department at the university in order to accomplish this product, which is a robot arm capable of playing chess against a human The robot arm has its own thinking from A to Z, it also moves the chess stones, no one controls it, it controls itself by itself and takes its own decisions. At the very first moment of thinking of this project, we thought that we cannot accomplish such a thing but our advisors encouragement and support motivated us to go into this direction and start working The project in general has 3 main parts: The chess game software, The robot and its code in MATLAB and the sensitive electrical chess board We started building everything from scratch, we did not have anything ready We mostly used robotics, mechanical design, systems connecting, programming the robot arm and modifying the chess game code We have participated in IT Expo4 technological show in Palestine, April-2011 in Beir Ziet There were 22 projects participating in the exposition, and we were awarded the first place prize Our project was a distinguished one (thanks God) among other projects, due to the fact that we have software and hardware We had the prerequisites to succeed in the project and thanks God we did succeed in Bier Ziet As any robotics project, it is possible to get involved in many fields, so we chose to consider the robot arm to be a chess game player The robot is practically able to play chess since we included the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in it so it is easy then to design another robot that is able to move electrical parts, assemble electrical boards, or assemble parts in a container or anything similar to this in our factories We for sure want to continue working on other project and this one as well. Robotics is a missing world in out countries. It is also our honor to be among those started working with robotics.
