Ammonite’s VAT (Validity & Authenticity Technology)

You are in the education industry and you’re
curious about using online learning, but let’s face it, the reputation of online assessments
is pretty poor. For example, here’s a typical true/false
question. The student takes a guess, gets the question wrong and look at that, “Would
you like another go?” Of course they would. Especially when the question hasn’t changed.
The reality is that students completing assessment tasks ‘this way’ only get good at clicking.
They don’t even have to read the question or the possible answers. That’s why we, at Ammonite have developed
our Validity & Authenticity Technology or VAT. What’s different about VAT? This question
requires a student to be able to select hardwood species from a list of 6 timbers. This one
question has a databank of 19 correct answers and 10 incorrect answers. Simply by telling
the system to select 3 correct and 3 incorrect responses, over 116,000 unique questions can
be generated. If you include randomisation this equates to over 83 million variations
of this single question. This might take the clickers a while! Validity
& Authenticity Technology also penalises a student if they get a question wrong by sending
them back a number of questions or to the start. This quickly makes any student realise
that the easiest way to finish a task is to actually learn the content and answer the
questions with confidence. I know what you’re thinking, “this is all
well and good but there is no proof of who is sitting the assessment!”, that’s why
we created the option for trainers to utilise webcams for authenticity. The webcam takes
a photo of the student answering every question. This methodology makes the online classroom
more valid and reliable than the face to face counterpart. Ammonite’s VAT technology, confidence in
online training!
