did you know that one of the best chess players in the entire world lives right here in Lexington that’s right he’s getting ready to head off to the inaugural senior US Chess Championship lex18 s Clare Crouch caught up with him to learn what he loved so much about the game chess it’s a combination of art science and sport and Gregory Kai Donna loves it it’s like the whole universe you know I can talk for hours about this his love for the game began when he was just a child at the age of six my best friend gave me chess said as a birthday present and so it was a lot from the first side and soon he was obsessed carrying his board with him everywhere he went in his native Soviet Russia as he got older the game he loved went from a hobby to a lifelong passion and career his talent could not be denied then my visions grew and grew and so I eventually became one of the best players in the world in 1988 he became a grandmaster then after immigrating with his family to America in 1991 his career continued to take off he’s now recognized as one of the foremost instructors in the country and in 2013 was inducted into the u.s. chess Hall of Fame I consider chess to be a sport just a mental sport unlike in other sports there are no judges who decide your fate it’s just you your mind your stamina now at the age of 59 he is far from finished in just days he’ll jet off to st.
